Student Visa Guide — Italy

Welcome to your comprehensive guide on obtaining a student visa for Italy! This guide will help you navigate the process whether you are an undergraduate or graduate student.

Overview

Undergraduate Students

Non-EU undergraduate students must obtain a National Visa (Type D) before studying full-time in Italy. You will apply at the Italian consulate in your country of residence and then apply for a residence permit (Permesso di Soggiorno) within 8 days of your arrival. The visa typically covers one academic year and can be renewed annually for the duration of your studies.

Graduate Students

Non-EU graduate students also need to secure a National Visa (Type D) before entering Italy for full-time master’s or PhD studies. You will apply at the Italian consulate with your admission/pre-enrollment documents, proof of finances, accommodation, and health insurance. After arriving in Italy, you must apply for the Permesso di Soggiorno within 8 days. Work is permitted for up to 20 hours per week, and after graduation, you may convert your status to job-search or work if eligible.
